Anambra State has a rich and distinguished history that dates back thousands of years. The region is regarded as one of the cradles of Igbo civilisation, with archaeological discoveries at Igbo-Ukwu, Aguleri, Awka, Ezira, and Nri providing evidence of advanced settlements and craftsmanship dating back to around 4500 BC.

The ancient Kingdom of Nri, located in present-day Anambra State, is widely recognised as one of the earliest centres of governance, spirituality, and culture in Igboland. Its influence helped shape the traditions, customs, and social institutions of the Igbo people.

Modern Anambra State was officially created on 27 August 1991 from the former Anambra State by the administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (GCFR). The state derives its name from the Anambra (Omambala) River, an important tributary of the River Niger.

Anambra State was created on 27 August 1991 by the military administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida as part of Nigeria’s state creation exercise. The new Anambra State was carved out from the former Anambra State, which was divided into two states: Anambra State and Enugu State.
